Prevention and early intervention strategies have long been identified as critical to improving our nation’s health. Yet funding has traditionally been channelled into tertiary treatment services. This article reviews relevant data collated as a result of young people attending headspace services and identifies the at risk cognitions that can signal the need for a primary intervention strategy. |
If we are serious about reducing young peoples’ suicidal behaviour, a stated major public health goal, strategies and systems are required to identify, respond to and better support young people demonstrating suicidal ideation prior to the onset of entrenched severe disorders.
